1 Degree North of the Equator - GARDEN CITY

SINGAPORE
The climate at the equator is stifling hot and humid. During one afternoon in crowded Chinatown, I overheard a tourist say "Singapore is so stressful." Ahh, the poor woman needed relief by going to a garden or park.

Orchid Garden at Singapore Botanic Gardens - pricelessly beautiful.

Yet, the year-round warmth, rain and humidity allows the place to be lushly green and blooming throughout the year.

Singapore Botanic Gardens

The Botanic Gardens (not including Orchids) is free and open to the public from 5am to 2am everyday. Entrance fee for orchids is $5 SGD ($ 3.70 USD). The Gardens are so good that it is a World Heritage Site.

At the Botanic Gardens, I saw joggers and pedestrians at night on well-lighted paths and feeling totally safe without law enforcement presence. We strolled through the gardens after dinner, two nights in a row. And, enjoyed ice cream nearby.

Surprisingly, I did not get one bug bite during my entire 5 days in Singapore. I couldn't believe it myself. Here, mosquito vector control is serious business.

Green Belts and Canopy Walks

Trees make the city landscape special. They provide relieving shade and graceful beauty. Singapore has mastered urban park design by linking tree canopy paths and ground trails.

One early morning, shortly after sunrise, we did a hike in a hilly green belt of Singapore. We did a m
iles-long chain of trails that traverse several parks. The linked parks from east to west are (bold parks have canopy walks):

I coped with the climate by being active in the morning, late afternoon and evening, especially for outdoor activities.

In middle of the day when heat is at its peak, I shopped or sheltered inside with A/C, and napped.
